| Portable Steam Tables | Capability: PocketSteam makes it possible
to carry a complete set of steam tables on any of the battery-powered handheld
computers that run the Microsoft Windows CE 2.0 operating system. PocketSteam
provides both thermodynamic and transport properties, including Prandtl number
and critical velocity. It also includes a built-in turbine expansion calculation.
The calculator can use a wide range of English and metric units for each
property. The user selects the display format and display accuracy for each
property.
The user can name any number of points and store all of their properties for later use. The stored points can be copied to the Windows clipboard and shared with other applications, such as Microsoft's Pocket Excel. They also can be stored in files that can be moved to a desktop computer and used by the companion desktop program. On-line help describes all features of the program. | Pressure Vessels | Capability: COADE Inc. has released
new versions of its PVElite integrated vessel design and stress analysis
program and its CodeCalc software for the design and analysis of pressure
vessel and heat exchanger components. PVElite version 3.40 includes ASME
Section VIII, Division 1, 1998 edition, an expanded database of yield stress
versus temperature, support for ASME Code Case 2290, and BS-5500 (British
Standard) code additions for isolated nozzle, conical, and combined stress
calculations. In addition to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel and the
BS 5500 codes, PVElite includes pressure-vessel standards such as ASCE No.
7, Uniform Building Code, National Building Code, ANSI B16.5, TEMA, and WRC
Bulletin 107. The software can be used to design tall towers, horizontal
vessels, pots and pans, and individual vessel components.
CodeCalc version 6.10 incorporates the same ASME standards as does PVElite. The database of yield stress versus temperature has been expanded, and unit options have been enhanced. | Desktop Calculator | Capability: The Omax desktop
engineering calculator provides a small window with a text box in which the
user can enter expressions to be evaluated. The calculator runs on top of
the Windows desktop, MS-Word, AutoCAD, or any other Windows application,
to provide calculations that can be cut and pasted into and out of the main
application. Multiple copies of the calculator can be opened as desired.
Inputs are displayed in a string that can be edited for "what if" studies.
The types of functions supported include: arithmetic, trigonometric, hyperbolic,
logarithmic, exponential, and nested parenthetical. Results and inputs can
be in either scientific or decimal notation. Full help screens and lists
of the supported functions are included.

| 3-D Viewer | Capability: The 3DView program
is a CAD file viewer that can import and display IGES, VDA, STL, ISO G-code,
and VRML files. The program offers dynamic rotation and real-time
cross-sectioning combined with surface-area and part-volume calculations.

| Outdoor Noise Modeling | Capability: The outdoor sound
propagation model SPM9613 is based on the ISO 9613 standard parts 1 and 2.
Features include the automatic breakdown of large 3-D or line sources into
multiple point sources, multiple barriers, automatic calculation of first
image sources (reflections), ground attenuation effects, and miscellaneous
attenuation due to foliage and industrial sites. Graphical output includes
sorted noise source spectrum waterfall plots at each observer location and
contour plotting on A- or C-weighted levels.

| Acoustic Boundary Elements | Capability: The core programs of
acoustic boundary elements implement the boundary element method with the
simplest elements in 2-D, 3-D, and axisymmetric acoustic (or Helmholtz) problems.
The H2LC, H3LC, and HALC codes, which are available as freeware, are described
in the research paper "Fortran Codes for Computing the Discrete Helmholtz
Integral Operators," by S.M. Kirkup, in Advances in Computational Mathematics,

| Electrical Calculations | Capability: Busbar.exe calculates
the electrical current rating, voltage drop, and power dissipation of copper
and aluminum busbars of any dimension (metric or imperial), and of standard
metric and U.S. (AWG) cable sizes. The program also allows for the calculation
of power factor correction to accurately match any particular motor based
on its characteristics.

| Air Handling Calculations | Capability: AHU.exe provides quick
calculations of psychrometric properties and loads for air handling unit
analyses using ASHRAE Fundamentals, 1997, Chapter 6. The program
uses IP units (dry and wet bulb temperatures in F and flows in cfm; toggles
between lbw/lga and grains). It shows the psychrometric chart on the screen
and prints the air handling unit schematic and psychrometric chart. AHU.exe
needs the file VBRUN300. DLL in the \Windows\System directory, which can
be found free on the Internet.

| Fluid Dynamics | Capability: CFX-5 combines CAD
input, automatic meshing, and the solution algorithms needed to perform
computational fluid dynamics analyses and predict heat transfer and flow
processes. The latest version includes parallel processing, transient
visualization, and rotating frame-of-reference capabilities.
Transient visualization allows the user to examine time-varying flow processes, yielding insight into such phenomena as vortex shedding and unsteady mixing. | Free-Form Surfaces | Capability: FastSurf 98, a free-form
surface modeling program for CADKEY 98 or CADKEY Wireframe, generates swept
and lofted surfaces, surfaces of revolution, offset surfaces, fillet blends,
variable radius fillets, and tabulated cylinders. Users can trim surfaces
with splines, curves, and other surfaces. FastSurf 98 also performs surface
intersections and entity projection. The program includes a module for creating
and analyzing surface vectors and planes, as well as surface and spline editing
tools to alter the shape of a surface.
FastSurf 98's surfaces can be converted to ACIS surfaces that can be used interactively with other ACIS solids, surfaces, and sheet bodies in CADKEY 98. The user can stitch ACIS solids and surfaces into one body, and trim or subtract ACIS bodies to construct a 3-D hybrid model, a capability that is useful in building complex, organic shapes.
