Energy Supply and Pipeline Transportation: Challenges and Opportunities

This timely book focuses on the economic and global issues pertaining to delivery of energy resources, particularly fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal. The author provides information and graphical material based on his many years of research in the energy supply and transportation field. The book covers four major topics: energy sources and supplies, market demand by region, energy transportation modes and issues (including security), and pipeline transportation. This book evolved from a lecture the author delivered in June 2007 at the Canadian Petroleum Institute in Calgary.

How Round Is Your Circle? Where Engineering and Mathematics Meet

How do you draw a straight line? How do you determine if a circle is really round? These may sound like simple or even trivial mathematical problems, but to an engineer the answer can mean the difference between success and failure. This book explores many of the same fundamental questions that working engineers deal with every day. Authors John Bryant and Chris Sangwin illustrate how physical models are created from abstract mathematical ones. Using elementary geometry and trigonometry, they guide readers through paper-and-pencil reconstructions of mathematical problems and show them how to construct actual physical models themselves. The authors take on everything from keeping a piston aligned in its cylinder to ensuring that automotive driveshafts rotate smoothly and cite many highlights from engineering history.

The King Bee

This biography of Admiral Ben Moreell, the founder of the U.S. Navy Seabees (immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941), is intended not only for those who have served in the elite unit, but for anyone who is interested in an engaging historical work. An Honorary Member of ASME, Moreell was the first non-Naval Academy graduate to achieve the rank of admiral. His engineering accomplishments were recognized by dozens of awards throughout the profession. Following his military tours, he became president and chairman of Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp. in Pittsburgh. During his time in industry, he influenced national issues like urban renewal and public health and enjoyed the trust of such men as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and United Mine Workers head John L. Lewis. Moreell's ability to give credit where it was due was just one aspect of the man who lived by the credo of the Seabees: "The difficult we do at once; the impossible takes a little longer."

Strategic Planning for Design Firms

According to the publisher, although design professionals are masters of technical skill, few receive formal training in management. Yet management skills, the authors argue, are pivotal to a firm's success. Raymond Kogan and Cara Bobchek have a combined 50 years of experience in management and design, and they use it to show architects, engineers, environmental consultants, landscape architects, interior designers, and planners how to shape a successful future for their firms. Using real-life examples, the authors show how the analytical and organizational skills that design professionals already have can be applied to create and implement a strategic plan. The material is presented in three parts: the strategic planning process, the six elements of a strategic plan, and the major issues of strategic planning.

A First Course in Continuum Mathematics

The modeling and simulation of fluids, solids, and other materials with significant coupling and thermal effects is becoming an increasingly important area of study in applied mathematics and engineering. A fundamental understanding of the basic principles of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics is necessary for such studies. This book is an introduction to these principles for graduate students. The authors introduce the basic axioms of continuum mathematics pertaining to mass, force, motion, temperature, energy, and entropy. They devote four chapters to different theories of fluids and solids, and consider both isothermal and thermal theories in detail.

Aircraft Performance

In this book, the author, a long-time chairman of the aerospace engineering department at the U.S. Naval Academy, sets forth a group of tested and proven methods needed to determine the performance of an aircraft. The central theme is the energy method, which enhances understanding of the standard methods and provides accessibility to advanced topics. While covering all the standard topics—level and climbing flight, range and endurance, takeoff and landing, and maneuvering flight—the book focuses on the energy methods applied to path performance analysis. Numerous examples from both the commercial and military sectors show how the concepts and calculations are applied to real-life situations.

Computer Methods and Experimental Measurements for Surface Effects and Contact Mechanics VIII

This volume contains most of the papers presented at the Eighth International Conference on Computer Methods and Experimental Measurements for Surface and Contact Mechanics held in The New Forest, U.K., in May 2007. The use of surface treatments can reduce the cost of components and extend the life of the elements. Their effect is of particular importance in the case of surfaces undergoing contact, a problem that is addressed in the book. Among the topics included are surface treatments, thin coatings, surface problems in contact mechanics, fracture and fatigue, and new applications.

Design Matters: The Organisation and Principles of Engineering Design

According to author James Armstrong, design is the essential component of engineering. This book demonstrates the need to understand the context, process, and delivery of engineering projects and services by focusing on the nature and practice of engineering design. The author, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and past president of the Institution of Structural Engineers, highlights the cultural, economic, political, and social parameters, and illustrates the importance of their understanding as demonstrated by successful designers. Among his many other accomplishments, Armstrong has designed and planned the Channel Tunnel Terminal works and the Falkland Islands airport.
