Electronic indexer
Danaher Motion, Wood Dale, Ill.

Danaher's electronic indexer solution set can double throughput compared with mechanical indexers, according to the company. It is said to let OEMs build a better machine, faster, and enables end users to precisely assemble small parts with reduced scrap and improved yield. There is no maintenance over the entire life of the system. In addition, the precisely matched components assure interoperability and optimized performance and ease of system selection and ordering. According to the company, mechanical indexers are inflexible when it comes to motion sequences, as they are limited by a fixed number of sequence points at a fixed angle. This rotary indexer product set can be quickly programmed to go in any direction, at any speed, and at any angle. This aids system integrators that deal with multiple product designs, including custom machines, as they can use a single indexer solution to satisfy various requirements. This indexer can rotate clockwise and counterclockwise for the shortest cycle time.

Thermo- couple sensor
Parker Hannifin, Tucson, Ariz.
A thermocouple assembly design from the company's Partek division provides a reliable temperature monitoring sensor for high-purity fluid systems. The sensor assembly is said to overcome weaknesses with current thermocouple sensors that can potentially reduce long-term stability, and is said to deliver cost savings to users over its lifetime. Designated the TS Series, the assembly has been designed as an alternative to sensors for high-purity flow systems that are fabricated by bonding the thermocouple wires between fluoropolymer tubing elements, a form of installation often carried out by end users. From analysis of failed parts used in this type of installation, Partek found that the bonding temperature can damage the wires' insulation. Such damage creates a wicking path for the flow media that leads to eventual failure of the wiring.

Clinch studs
PennEngineering, Danboro, Pa.
PEM Type HFHB Busbar self-clinching studs can be used in applications that need electrical or mechanical attachment points in copper. These phosphor bronze externally threaded fasteners offer twice the conductivity of conventional carbon steel studs, according to the company. The RoHS-compliant studs can install permanently in copper sheets as thin as 0.05 in. (1.3 mm) and have been engineered for high-strength attachment applications. Improved pull-through resistance is enabled by their large-head design, which allows the stud's head to project above the sheet material and distribute the axial tightening force over a wide area. Installation is done by placing the studs in punched or drilled holes in the copper sheet and squeezing them using any standard press. Thread sizes for these clinch studs range from 10-32 through 3/8-16 and M5 through M10.

Boosting joint strength
SPS Technologies, Jenkintown, Pa.
Preload indicating washers provide an accurate method of measuring the preload, or clamp force, in a bolted joint. Using preload indicating washers to achieve maximum preload lets designers maximize joint strength. Frequently, smaller-diameter fasteners or fewer fasteners can be used, reducing weight without reducing joint reliability. These washers are also useful with joints that are inaccessible to torque wrenches. No special tooling is required in the application of these washers. Three types of washers are available: standard, under-the-head, and oversize.
