Digital pressure gauge
Mico Inc., North Mankato, Minn.

The company's digital pressure gauge provides one-half percent terminal point accuracy and a standard pressure range of zero to 10 psi for use in measuring air, hydraulic, and vacuum pressures. The pressure range complies with the ASME B40.7 standard, reducing the chance of accidental over-pressure. The terminal point accuracy eliminates sensor offset problems by allowing the zeroing of the gauge at start-up. The terminal point accuracy also includes linearity, hysteresis, and repeatability, in contrast to error-prone best fit straight line accuracy on some gauges, according to the manufacturer. In addition to a zeroing button, other functions on the gauge keypad include a maximum and minimum pressure indicator, nine different engineering units of measure, and a backlight for easy viewing in low light areas.

Measuring stress
PCB Piezotronics Inc., Depew, N.Y.
Series M240 ICP strain sensors from the company's Force/Torque division use piezoelectric sensing elements to indirectly measure dynamic and quasi-static forces on machinery structures. These strain sensors feature high rigidity and have no moving parts inside them, so are not susceptible to fatigue or sensitivity changes over millions of cycles. They are useful for industrial process control and product quality assurance applications that require the measurement of repetitive cycles. In typical applications, upper and lower control limits are set to follow a desired force curve for the process, and if the actual force curve deviates from the control limits, the process is shut down. This prevents acceptance of non-conforming parts as finished goods. Applications include clinching, crimping, metal forming, plastic injection molding, pressing, punching, spot welding, stamping, and automatic assembly operations.

Liquid flow sensor
McMillan Co., Georgetown, Texas
Models 104 and 107 liquid Flo-Sensors precisely measure flow rates of fluids as low as 13 mL/minute, and are designed as an electronic alternative to ball-and-tube rotameters. Stainless steel construction guarantees compatibility with virtually any chemical, including many solvents and organic compounds, according to the company. A linearity of ±1.0 percent (full scale) and ±0.2 percent repeatability (full scale) provides accurate readings for critical applications. An analog 0-5V dc output and pulse output are both provided standard; 4-20 mA outputs and an integrated display are optional.

Linear encoders
Heidenhain Corp., Schaumburg, Ill.
The mechanics and electronics of the company's LC Series of absolute linear encoders have been fundamentally redesigned from the ground up to better meet today's measurement requirements in machine tools, and now include two interfaces — Heidenhain's EnDat 2.2 and FANUC 02. Heidenhain's new encoders are the LC 183 and 483 series with EnDat interface and LC 193 and 493 with FANUC interface. These encoders offer more electrical advantages than ever before, according to the company, including making purely serial axis-control possible. The resolution of the absolute position value is 5 nm for encoders with an accuracy grade of ±3 µm, and 10 nm for encoders with an accuracy grade of ±5 µm with the EnDat versions. Also regardless of the measuring length, the data word length is 32 bits, and with a clock frequency of 8 MHz, the formation of the position value and transfer takes approximately 20 µs. Both output formats also incorporate the single-field scanning technique, ensuring optimum signal quality, high traversing speed, and contamination resistance.
