Designing a Supplement

Welcome to the premiere issue of Mechanical Engineering Design.

Whether it is using engineering software tools to design a new brake pad for an OEM, or designing a new assembly process for an auto manufacturer, design is at the core of mechanical engineering, and the main function of many mechanical engineers.

This supplement is intended to provide insightful examples of engineering solutions through the use of various design tools and practices. And because design engineering education is an integral part of all engineers' training, we have included thought-provoking articles by some of the most celebrated engineering educators on how forward-thinking institutions are re-engineering today's curriculums in universities across the country.

Mechanical Engineering Design is a result of the cooperative efforts of many individuals, but special thanks go to Thomas Chase, a member of the Executive Committee of ASME's Design Engineering Division, and Crispin Hales, chair of the Design Engineering Division. They helped shape the content by providing input and direction, and helping to secure many of the authors whose articles appear inside.

Please send me your feedback on this issue. What do you think overall? Is the content interesting? Would you like to see more such supplements? Is the story mix appropriate? What topics would you like to see in future issues? Kindly send your comments via e-mail (see below) or fax at (212) 591-7841.

We hope you enjoy this premiere issue of Mechanical Engineering Design.
