power perspective

From the ASME Division Chair

by William G. Moore, P.E., chair, Power Division

ASME's Power Division has been serving the power industry faithfully since 1920. Its success is reflected in the size of its current membership; at 5,646 strong, the Power Division is one of the largest technical divisions of ASME.

The Power Division focuses on the advancement of power generation, primarily through the utilization of its seven technical committees: Combined Cycle; Turbines, Generators, and Auxiliaries; Heat Exchangers; Hydro Power; Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability; Plant Operations; and Power Systems.

Our annual event, the International Joint Power Generation Conference, is one of the division's primary activities. This year's IJPGC runs from June 16 to 19 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. It will be co-located with the ASME Turbo Expo, and co-sponsored by ASME's International Gas Turbine Institute. For this conference, the Power Division has coordinated the peer review of more than 175 technical papers, ranging from advancements in power plant design and reliability improvements to plant operations and many other industry-related topics. This combined conference will present the absolute latest and best in technological improvements related to power plant equipment and its operation.

The Power Division's technical committees will be meeting in Atlanta June 16 and 17.

The Combined Cycle Users Group meeting will also be held in Atlanta. One of its previous sessions drew 250 participants, all dedicated to this particular field.

All committee meetings are open to anyone interested in the committee. Additional information about the Combined Cycle Committee, or any of the committees that are listed above, can be found at www.asme.org/
divisions/power/committees.

One of the division's recent successes is the improvement in communication that we have with our members, through the use of a dedicated Web page, www. asme.org/divisions/power. More information about this year's conference, the division, and all of its committees can be found there. The titles of all papers for this conference, for instance, can be found there by clicking on the IJPGC logo.

The work of the division has been aided by other improvements in ASME's online presence. All the papers for this conference were submitted and reviewed through ASME's online Web conferencing tool. This tool allows submission of paper abstracts, peer reviews, final paper submittals, deadline notifications, and all correspondence to be done electronically. Conference organizers and track leaders can tell with a few clicks of the mouse the status of all papers submitted for review, or the status of any one individual paper.

The Power Division continued to participate this year in the award of up to four student scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $1,500. A committee of three to four members evaluated the candidates for the scholarship based on grade point average, energy- and power-related courses taken, student leadership, student participation and interest, and a recommendation letter from the student advisor. Preference was given to junior or senior level students. Student paper awards are also available, and the Hydro committee sponsors its own student award. The Power Division Web site contains much more information on these scholarships.

Next year, the Power Division is planning to hold its annual conference together with the Electric Power Conference, March 30 to April 1, in Baltimore. In addition to the Power Division's participation, there will be at least nine additional conferences and user groups running concurrently, all dedicated to the needs of the power generation and energy markets. Combined with more than 600 exhibiting companies, this will be one of the biggest and best power conferences of the year.

There will be many opportunities to get involved and network with other professionals in your field. And, as always, we will need volunteers to chair technical sessions, participate in panel discussions, teach courses, write
papers, review papers, and contribute in other ways to the power industry.

Please e-mail me at bmoore@national-electric-coil. com with your comments, suggestions, new ideas, and general thoughts. I hope to see you this year in Atlanta, and next year in Baltimore.
