editorial

We are very pleased to bring you, for the third year in a row, Mechanical Engineering Power, a supplement to Mechanical Engineering magazine that focuses on process-related industries.

In November 1997, our premier issue, which was then mailed only to a select number of readers who expressed interest in certain areas of technical specialization, drew a great deal of praise from many of its readers.

Your expressed interest in this special edition of your monthly magazine inspired us to pursue the project further and publish two more issues, last year's, which was bound into the August Mechanical Engineering, and this current issue. This year, everyone who receives Mechanical Engineering also receives Mechanical Engineering Power.

Part of our editorial challenge is to ensure that the mix of stories that appears in this publication satisfies your needs. We have tried to provide a balance between some specific, case-study articles, and others that deal with trends in the power generation and process areas.

We would like you to provide us with some important feedback on this special edition:

• Please tell us what you think of this supplement overall.
• Is the content interesting to you?
• Would you like to see more such supplements?
• Is the story mix appropriate?
• What topics would you like to see us explore in the future?
• Also, we would like to know what you may not have liked about the          supplement.

Your input will determine the content of possible future issues.

Please send me an e-mail with your input falcionij@asme.org, or, if you are not connected to the Internet, please send me a fax (212) 591-7841.

In this issue, we touch on some important topics and new technologies. As you can see by our rather provocative cover, one of the key issues facing the power generation area today is that finance now rivals technology as the key market driver. We would like to know your views on this important topic.

Readers of Mechanical Engineering have always been exceptionally involved. When you read something you don't like, you always let us know. Just as important, you also let us know when we run articles that you really enjoy. We ask that you continue this tradition with the magazine you are now reading, and write to me with your comments.

We hope you will enjoy Mechanical Engineering Power and trust that this supplement provides you with an interesting glimpse into a fascinating and important area.
